The primary goal of a notebook is to get out of the way… to disappear. It does this by perfectly fitting into your writing situation. How accessible does it need to be? What notebook tangibles do you need? How will it withstand a beating? By fitting into how you write, a notebook becomes invisible. It wastes none of your time because any moment you spend noticing the notebook is a moment you could be noticing something else, and writing about it. #
He's writing about writing, and I draw, but a lot of it is still relevant, obviously. His article goes on to compare a dozen different notebook in a dozen different ways, and it's worth reading.
He points out a notebook I'd like to check out, just because their website is super sweet: Field Notes. One he never covered, but which I always thought was neat, was Think Jot Draw.
In true "ooh- shiny new toy" fashion, I remember that I already have a very nice sketchbook. It is sitting at home, a little neglected of late...
