Book Nine

Today I finished my ninth illustrative journal. I used a little "memo book" from Field Notes and I was thrilled with it.

The book is well constructed. It's not a hard cover, but it held up to my abuse. It's small enough to fit in any pocket, which meant I didn't have to carry around a bag filled with sketchbooks all the time. What a novel idea. Graph paper is not something I usually draw on but it was actually really inspiring. I did all kinds of things on it that I never would have thought of doing on plain paper.

I filled it in 16 days using just the ball point pen they sent with my order. What a joy to come down from the high horse of art supplies and use a plain old ball point pen. What a relief to be so unburdened that I can just draw.

This "just draw"ing thing is something I have seriously got to get a handle on. The last thing I drew took me three hours to complete, which is why I think I'm so scared of drawing anything. It's a serious time sink and I don't have the time.

But it doesn't have to be that way!

I love my FieldNotes books too - I tend to fill mine up with words, but occasionally do sketches.

I agree that they're really effective at facilitating the "just write / just draw" concept...
